The Barrel Bros’ Review
The nose on this Starlight Distillery Port Finish definitely wears its port finish on its sleeve, showing off a dark red wine profile that blends into scents of cherry Starburst and light oak. You’ll also catch a few unexpected notes like toasted pecans and, depending on how much air it gets, sadly a slight edge that reminds some of a permanent marker.
The mouthfeel on the palate is juicy, but the depth is hit-or-miss. You get a steady stream of red fruit sweetness from the port, mixed with bits of dark chocolate, waffle, and pie crust. It’s a bit muted compared to other finishes, and while the sweetness is pleasant, it doesn't always go as deep as you might hope. It’s an easy-drinking profile, but it stays fairly light on the palate.
The experience at the end is a bit of a mixed bag. Sometimes you’ll catch that lingering red fruit sweetness, while other times it shifts toward a darker, slightly bitter cappuccino note. Be prepared for a bit of heat that can sneak in early, which can feel a little distracting.
This Single Barrel release is a decent, middle-of-the-road pour that feels a bit young. It’s not necessarily a bottle you need to brag about, but it works fine for a casual drink if you enjoy port-finished whiskies. At its typical MSRP, it feels like a little high for a simple, fruit-forward experience, though it's rarely going to be found on sale. It's not the most complex bottle on the shelf, but it’s a straightforward option if you’re looking for a change of pace.

The Rye Guy Says
Score: 6/10
Value: 2/5
THE NOSE:
I certainly pick up on the port finish. It has a sweet dark red wine profile.
However, I also get a bit of sharpie and light oak.
Also an undertone of nuttiness like pecan.
THE TASTE:
The mouthfeel is juicy and full, but not very deep. The flavor is mostly light oak and dark chocolate.
Almost chocolate pie like as I do get a bit of a pie crust flavor or waffle.
I’m not really picking up any of the typical port profile notes though.
THE FINISH:
Reminds me of well made cappuccino with a particularly dark profile and slightly bitter.
I do get a bit of a burn on the front half of the finish.
BUY OR PASS?
The whiskey does present fairly youthy from the color, the palate and a bit of a bite on the finish. The flavors were middling and overall the experience felt fairly mediocre for a $65 dollar price point.
The Hunter Says
Score: 7/10
Value: 2.5/5
THE NOSE:
Fruit and cherry, but not medicinal.
A bit of cherry starburst.
THE TASTE:
A pleasant amount of sweetness - and it stays all redfruit — from the port finish I’d imagine.
But don’t expect a ton of flavor, it’s very muted. It’s nice, but muted.
THE FINISH:
Sometimes the red fruit sweetness hangs out, and sometimes it goes into alcohol burn, so it’s a mixed bag.
BUY OR PASS?
This is enjoyable, but nothing super amazing. It feels like passing off some not-so-good bourbon by finishing it in port and making it a single barrel.
Not bad by any means, but nothing you’d race to tell someone about.
