THE NOSE:
It’s a more subdued note, but still very much a Purple Top. Bright red fruit, cherry and grape, and a bit of bubble gum.
But then it goes into the darker caramel notes I love. There’s even a bit of buttered waffle with syrup.
THE TASTE:
Yes, the four years youthiness comes through, but it’s very much the profile of Willett Purple Top.
It’s a strong bourbon profile with a ton of sweetness, but there is definitely a youthy twang on the end. It’s not offputting, but it’s there.
THE FINISH:
The finish is short and the profile is youthiness.
You’d probably not notice it if you weren’t looking, but really nothing here.
BUY OR PASS?
Is this as good at an older Willett Purple top, no. Is it $70 as good and much more finable, yes. And that’s saying something.
For Willett’s 4-year offerings, I’d probably prefer their rye, but this is still something you won’t regret having on your shelf.
