The Barrel Bros’ Review

The nose opens rich and dark with layers of red fruit. Grape jelly, fig, cherry, and blackberry show up immediately, creating a deep, jammy sweetness. There’s also a chocolate-covered cherry note that adds to the dessert-like character. Beneath the fruit, you’ll find a little toffee sweetness along with subtle rye notes—pine and cedar—that give the nose some structure. At times it even brings to mind the profile of a strong batch of Midwinter Night’s Dram, especially with those grape jelly tones.

The mouthfeel is silky and buttery, coating the palate nicely. The flavor shifts slightly lighter than the nose, with fruity notes of apple and grape leading the sip before moving into cherry cola and chocolate-covered cherry. The rye backbone shows up more clearly here, bringing hints of pine and cedar that add a cooling element and balance out the sweetness. The wine-finished influence comes across strongly, delivering a rich, fruit-forward experience that many whiskey fans will recognize as a hallmark of High West’s finishing style.

The finish stays sweet with lingering red fruit and a touch of smoke, almost like a mild cigar note. That smoky tone helps round out the sweetness and keeps the sip from becoming overly dessert-like. While the flavors remain enjoyable, the finish fades a bit quicker than expected given how strong the nose and palate are.

High West The Prisoner’s Share delivers exactly what many whiskey enthusiasts hope for from a finished whiskey—big flavor, layered sweetness, and a polished experience. The combination of dark red fruit and rye spice creates a profile that feels both rich and balanced. The main challenge is the MSRP, which puts it firmly in the premium category. Still, if you enjoy wine-finished whiskeys with bold fruit notes, this bottle absolutely delivers the kind of depth and character you’d want from a high-end pour.

Finding it on sale would make the value even easier to justify, but even at full price it remains a memorable and enjoyable bottle.

THE NOSE:
The nose smells like dark red fruit and jelly. Specifically grape and fig.

I also pick up on some of the rye pine notes.

It’s perfectly sweet and very rich.

THE TASTE:
The mouthfeel is silky and buttery.

The flavor is a bit less dark than the nose providing fruity notes of apple and grape.

I do continue to pick up on the pine and cedar profile and it provides a bit of a cooling tone.

THE FINISH:
I get a bit of a smokey cigar note on the finish, but it still remains sweet.

This is a happy development from the sweetness that helps provide a more well rounded experience.

The rye profile develops after multiple sips.

BUY OR PASS?
This is what whiskey enthusiasts are wanting from every bottle. It brings great flavor, depth, and refinement. The flavor profile of dark red fruit and rye is right up my alley.

Not many bottles over $100 provide an experience worthy of the price, in my opinion, but this one certainly is.

The Hunter Says

Score: 8.5/10

THE NOSE:
Rich and dark. I get a lot of red fruit like cherry and blackberry, plus that classic chocolate-covered cherry note.

There’s also a little Kool-Aid vibe and some toffee sweetness.

Honestly, it reminds me a lot of a really good Midwinter Night’s Dram, especially those grape jelly notes.

THE TASTE:
That chocolate-covered cherry shows up big. It moves into cherry cola, with the rye giving it a nice backbone.

If I tried this blind, I would swear it was an older batch of Midwinter. It hits that same sweet, wine-finished rye profile almost perfectly.

THE FINISH:
It keeps a nice red-fruit sweetness going, but it fades a little quicker than I’d like.

After how good the nose and taste are, I really wish it hung around longer.

BUY OR PASS?
Overall, this is a very good pour. The main downside is the price. At around $150, this would be an absolute home run. The wine finish comes through very sweet for me, which I really enjoy, even if others might not get it as strong.

It’s a fun, tasty bottle that feels a bit pricey, but still delivers.
